Magnesium Stearate

Magnesium stearate is a metallic salt of a fatty acid (stearic acid). It is normally white and manufactured as a powder, granule or flake. Like most stearates magnesium stearate has a greasy, oily slippery feel, yet dry to the touch similar to graphite.

Most stearates are soluble in hot polyolefin’s, some solvents, and oils. Stearates are typically not soluble in water and alcohols. Stearates are used for waterproofing  applications including stuccos, concretes, ropes, coatings etc.

Magnesium stearate is used in plastics, esp rigid PVC and ABS, as a lubricant, mold release agent, and modifier. It also is used in tableting for all sorts of materials, including pharmaceuticals. Stearates also offer anti-caking properties with some powders.

Stearates are generally not regulated and are considered non-hazardous.
